Seussical Musical

Emma had her 2nd grade Musical on Tuesday March 3rd.  The theme was Dr. Seuss and the kids were allowed to wear their hair in their favorite “Whooville” style.

Snowpocalypse 2015

It snowed in Tulsa from Feb. 27-all through the 28th.  We only got about inches maybe but it was still plenty of snow to play in.  This was a bittersweet weekend because we were supposed to be in Texas with our friends but the weather kept us home. :(

We snuck outside for some quick pictures and about 15 minutes of sledding.  It was SOOOO cold, we didn’t last long.  And no, I didn’t let Cash come out this time.

Monarch Ball

We had the privilege of going to the Monarch Ball with my good friend Jamey Webb, who is on the board for DVIS.  It was a wonderful evening and we felt honored to be there!

IMG 1306

My Mom and Aunt Judy kept the kids for us and when they were taking pictures of us right before we left I felt like I was going to prom all over again. :)

Dinner was AMAZING.  Filet Mignon with salmon, and cheese potatoes.  I want to have that meal again.

After a presentation they had a live band and dancing.  We didn’t dance- but we watched other people dance which was definitely just as fun!!!

Emma’s Baptism

Emma was baptized at our church on Sunday, February 15th.  She asked Jesus to come into her heart almost 2 years ago- April 19, 2013.  Emma has been very nervous and terrified of going in front of the church to announce her Salvation and/or being baptized in front of a lot of people.  We decided not to push her and to allow it to be her decision.  About 4 months ago she decided that she was ready to go forward in church.  She decided late on a Saturday night and we were so excited for her!

We then had to work out the details of when she would be baptized… she really wanted her Pops to baptize her.  He is a Baptist Minister in TX and it was very difficult for him to take a Sunday off in December or January.  We were able to nail down Feb. 15th because Robin’s Mom had a 3 day weekend and he could take that Sunday off at his church.

Emma was very excited about her Baptism Day.  I went back to the baptistry with her at about 10:15 and at about 10:25 her bestest friend in the whole world opened the door and brought her flowers. :) I still remember when we went back stage to visit Aubrey before her Baptism several years back.  Such a sweet memory.

Emma and Aubrey checking out the water… unfortunately there was a problem with the heat pump that day and we discovered that the water was freezing cold.  I was very nervous that Emma would back out or not walk into the water.  At this point it was too late to remedy the situation.

Valentine Party Day!

Emma and Foster had their Valentine Parties on Friday, Feb. 13th.  Here they are before school… (Foster brought each of his teachers a pot of tulips.)

Chinese New Year

This year the Chinese New Year fell on Thursday, February 19th.  Emma is in the Chinese Immersion program so this day is a very big day for she and her classmates!  They always have a dragon parade and then participate in some fun games together.

Fortunately this year I am on the Yearbook Committee so I have been able to sneak into her classroom a few times this year to get some pictures of the kids.  It is fascinating to watch the kids in the Chinese Immersion program.  They speak in Mandarin Chinese exclusively while in their Chinese classroom for half of the day.  I loved just listening and absorbing while I was in that classroom!  These pics were taken in Chinese Immersion…

The Chinese Immersion program has been perfect for Emma.  The thing we love the most is that these kids stay together for 5 years- they know each other and accept each other so well.  They are like brothers and sisters.  Emma loves her classmates so much and it is really neat to watch them together.  She does not speak Chinese to us at home at all, but we know that she knows it, because her teachers tell us she knows it!  She can read it, write it, and speak it.  I am in awe of how much she has learned in 2 and a half years.

Robin’s Office Decor

Robin’s office at work has been bare for far too long.  His co-workers have been nagging him to decorate and hang something on the walls for some time.  We finally decided it was TIME to get that done right before his Birthday. :) We framed the Baylor panoramic poster and an Avett Brother’s poster and those were the two focal pieces for the room. :)

We brought all 3 kids and my Mom to the office to “help.”  In all seriousness my Mom is a fantastic decorator and she was a huge help.

We rearranged the greenery in the basket but this is kind of what his office ending up looking like.

Robin was very pleased with the final look.  I’m sure we will add to this as the months go on, but I’m glad it feels a bit more homey for him.

Harlem Globetrotters

On Friday, Feb. 6h we were invited to go to the BOK Center with the Falat family to watch the Globetrotters in a Suite.  It was sour first time to sit in a suite for any event and it was such a fun experience!  Here are the kiddos before we walked in…

IMG 1041

The food was amazing! There was quite a selection- tons of stuff the kids loved and a full mexican spread for the adults.

We had a really hard time explaining the Harlem Globetrotters to the kids before we got there… they were very entertained and now they realize just how very silly those guys are!

February iPhone pics

February was quite a weird month!  Here are some snapshots from my phone over the past several weeks…

Poor Cash was sick quite a bit during January and February.  He had croup, RSV, and a very strange forehead rash! He missed several days of his Mother’s Day Out.

Here he is on Super Bowl Sunday.  We were just getting ready to leave for a Super Bowl party when he spiked a fever. :(

IMG 0991

This is the saddest picture ever.  I took it to send to Robin to show him how sad Cash was… he rarely does this.  He is usually SO happy.

IMG 1001

This is blurry… but I wanted to document Foster’s 100 day of school project- he glued 100 cotton balls on a Snowman.  He loved doing this project.

IMG 1008

One of the funnest things I did during the month of February was talk to Foster’s class about being a nurse!  They were studying community helpers and I got to talk to them for about 20 minutes about my job as a nurse.  The kids were just hilarious and Foster was so happy to have me there.  I brought several “tools” to show them (stethoscope, otoscope, thermometer, bandaids, tongue depressor, BP cuff, etc.)

IMG 1009

Once a month on a Wednesday afternoon we have a house cleaner come to our house and Cash and me have to find somewhere to GO to get out of the house.  We usually go to my Mom’s house (she is at work) and we eat lunch and then I put him down for a nap in a pack ’n play.  Cash LOVES going to Nana’s house.  He heads straight for her toy closet- I’m pretty sure he things her toys are much cooler than the ones we have at our house. :)

IMG 1015

Ok, so this is the horrible forehead rash.  At first we thought it was just some red bumps from where he ran into a wall in our house.  However, we soon realized it was something else!  Our pediatrician was very puzzled by this but thought it was probably related to him being sick.  We got some antibiotic ointment to put on it. He missed several days of school and church (before the bumps were crusted over and healing.)  I took him to a Dermatologist 2 weeks after the spots first appeared because the spots still weren’t gone and she said we just needed to keep putting the same ointment on.  She said they were healing, he wasn’t contagious, and we just had to wait it out.  Bizarre! I am happy to report that the spots are finally gone. Poor guy!

IMG 1089

We had a lot of fun playing on the park with some friends on a beautiful 70 degree day!

Pops and Gigi and Tommy and Crystal and kids came to town for Emma’s baptism on Feb. 13th.  We went to the park on Saturday night and it turned out to be a lot colder than we thought it would be- we only stayed for 10 minutes!

We got a snow day on Feb. 17th, Robin’s Birthday.  Me and Emma decided to pick up Aubrey and take her for a pedicure.  The girls had a blast and felt SO BIG.

IMG 1214

Oh my word, they are drinking Starbuck’s hot chocolates.  I feel like I am seeing a glimpse into their future.  They picked the same nail polish colors by the way.

IMG 1216

We celebrated Robin and Judy’s Birthdays on Friday, Feb. 20th.  We went to Cheddar’s and then had cake and ice cream at Nana’s house.  Here is their yearly birthday cake picture. :)

IMG 1266

IMG 1264

Foster got to go to several fun Birthday parties this month.  His two best buds from school both have Birthdays on Feb. 17th- the same day as Robin’s Birthday!  Here are Foster and Corbin at Henry’s Birthday party.

IMG 1272

And here is Foster at Corbin’s Birthday party.  Corbin’s mom made handmade superhero capes for all of the kids!

IMG 1278

This isn’t a fabulous picture but it is one that I want to remember.  The big kids were at school, I had just waken up Cash and we sat in his room and watched some light snow falling down.  He kept saying “ooh, ahhh, coooold!”  We watched the snow for about 30 minutes.  In that moment I had tears in my eyes.  I am so grateful that I get to share these moments with my kids.  I remember doing this with Emma and Foster when they were little… they grow up SO FAST.  Thankful for small moments like this.

IMG 1330

Emma started taking an art class at school on Thursday afternoons.  Two of her good friends are in the class also. This is one of the pieces of art she made… she said it is called “Op Art”- like optical illusion. Emma really loves art.

IMG 1344

Me and the kiddos went to see Mary Poppins at the high school with my Mom on Thursday night.  We were blown away by the talent- so amazing! The kids loved it.

IMG 1346

Foster had his fairy tale day at school on Feb. 27th.  He got to dress as a prince, knight, or King!  Here is my handsome Knight in Shining Armor!

This is a picture of Foster and Emma at the same age, on the same day of school, 3 years apart. :)

IMG 1356

We were supposed to go to TX on Feb. 27th to spend the weekend with the Rowes and Kreys in Allen.  We had tickets to an Avett Brother’s concert on Saturday night.  Friday morning it started snowing in Texas and we started hearing about accidents and horrible road conditions there.  We couldn’t leave until about 3:30 that day and that is right when bad weather started in Oklahoma.  :(  At 3:00 we made the very sad decision to not travel on Friday.  We decided to see if the roads improved at all Saturday morning.  Unfortunately we woke up to weather advisories in every county of Oklahoma.

Here was a map of traffic conditions mid-day on Friday. Look at all of the wrecks!

Here was a picture out my front car windows when picking up the kids at 3:30.

We were so sad to miss out a fun time with our friends, but we tried to make a smart, safe decision. The weather did not work with us that weekend!

Goodbye Tonsils and Adenoids!

A little back story about Emma and her tonsils and adenoids… Emma had to have tubes put in her ears when she was 1 year old and just that one set helped her tremendously.  At the time of that ENT consult the Doctor did not feel like her tonsils and adenoids needed to come out- they were normal in size and did not seem to be impairing her health.  Over the past couple of years we have noticed that Emma snores at night and breathes through her mouth often.  This past November when we were at our Orthodontist he asked me if I noticed that Emma breathed through her mouth and I said YES!  He explained that this could be a huge problem for her teeth!  He showed me that her adenoids were huge on x-ray and all of that tissue in the back of the nasal cavity and mouth can cause the tongue to push forward which in turn messes with her teeth!  As I began researching this I realized so many common links… Emma is in speech therapy and the main concern regarding her speech is a tongue thrust.  In January we saw an ENT and he took one look at her tonsils (they were huge) and recommended that we do surgery to remove both tonsils and adenoids as soon as possible.  When I asked about waiting until Spring Break of Summer he said he wouldn’t wait that long… the damage done by inadequate sleep, mouth breathing, dental damage, and even facial structure damage compounds every day… the sooner the better!  We scheduled surgery for 2 weeks later!

Emma’s surgery was on Monday, January 19th which was Martin Luther King Day, a day she had off school.  This day turned out to be the perfect day… Mom and Judy were off work so they were able to watch the boys at the house.  Also, Robin got assigned to a 3 week jury duty that week before and we were very worried that he would miss Emma’s surgery.  Luckily, the court was closed for MLK Day so he was able to be at Emma’s surgery.

We arrived at 8:00 at Tulsa Spine and Specialty Hospital.  This was the same place that we did her ear tube surgery in 2007.  Both times we have had a fabulous experience- excellent patient care and customer service.  We got all checked in at admissions and they took us to a pre-op room.  Here is Emma with her favorite animal ever, Lucy dog, and a brand new teddy bear that the hospital gave her.

Here she is with her new bear after getting in her hospital gown.

They gave Emma the “goofy juice” when she was in the room with us.  She was HILARIOUS!  Giggling, almost falling of the bed.  Robin and I were cracking up.  At one point Emma told us to call her “Bad Kitty” from now on.  That nickname is pretty perfect and we have started calling her that on a regular basis.  She doesn’t remember saying that. :)

The surgery was only about 30 minutes.  Dr. Siemens came out to talk to us and said that things went great.  He said that her tonsils were moderate sized.  Her adenoids, on the other hand, were HUGE, blocking the majority of her naval cavity. He said it was great that we took them out and this should be a “Homerun” for her health-wise.

This is immediately after surgery in the recovery room.  She was sleeping away… it took her quite a while to really wake up.

IMG 0926

Here is the adorable Hello Kitty popsicle that she did not eat.  She got very nauseated in recovery.

IMG 0927

We had a bit of a rough time at the hospital in recovery, she threw up a couple of times and said that her throat really hurt.  They gave her some anti nausea meds and pain meds through her IV.  We were finally able to go home at around noon.  We were worried about her getting sick in the car but we made it!

Our fabulous recovery room nurse, Mary, gave us a ton of great information and advice.  She told us to get Emma eating regular food as soon as possible.  She asked for a sandwich when we got home but right after we made it she decided she wasn’t up for that.  She was in quite a bit of pain and refused to eat or drink that entire afternoon.  Her sweet Aunt Judy may or may not have bribed her with money to take small drinks of water! :)  It worked!

By that evening, Emma was doing so much better.  My sweet friend Erin, who blogs for Shop-Chopsticks, brought Chicken and Noodles for our whole family for dinner and Emma was able to eat it!  Our other good friend, Krista, made Banana Pudding.  She was able to eat that too! What would we do without amazing friends?

Uncle Ron came by that night and brought Emma the most beautiful orchid with a teddy bear holding onto it.

IMG 0928

IMG 0929

Emma slept great the entire night.  The next morning she popped out of bed and said “My throat is so much better!”  She ate and drank all day long.  We gave Motrin and Tylenol on an alternating schedule every 3 hours and she never complained of pain.  From that day on Emma did so awesome.  The Dr. told us she needed to stay home from school for a full week.  Even though she was feeling great we knew this was necessary for a full recovery.

So what did we do for a full week at home?  Lots of fun things!  Day 1 we busted out the Shrinky Dinks!  I used to make these when I was little and I found them on Amazon.  I knew Emma would love them.  She made a shrink dink bracelet.

IMG 0932

For dinner that night she requested spaghetti.  She had THREE bowls of spaghetti.  She also loved using this Frozen water bottle that her sweet friend Bella gave her for her Birthday.  We made sure she drank 3 full bottles full of water each day to keep her hydrated.

IMG 0933

We had several ice cream picnics in the living room. :)

IMG 0934

On Thursday Emma received a surprise present in the mail from Pops and Gigi!  She was so excited! She got some awesome activity books and some really cute comfy kitty p.j’s.  She wore those pi’s for the rest of the week!

IMG 0943

IMG 0944

By the next Monday (1 week post-op) she was completely ready to go back to school!  Here she is before school.  She took her teddy bear from the hospital to show her classmates.

IMG 0955

We are so proud of Emma, she handled this surgery like a champ! She kept up with all of her school work and didn’t complain once.  Honestly, I will look back on that week with Emma with very fond memories- it was like she and I got a little bonus Winter Break! :)
